MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has approved and will endorse to Congress the draft federal constitution of the Consultative Committee (ConCom), panel spokesperson Ding Generoso said Monday night.

"At the meeting of the President with ConCom members after receiving the draft Constitution, the President said he is approving and endorsing the draft constitution in toto," he said.

But Duterte requested to revise a provision that would enable him to step down during the transition period if the administration's push for a shift to federalism succeeds.

"He (Duterte) meant the rest of the constitution but with changes in the transitory provisions," Generoso said.

Earlier, Duterte said he will not seek an extension of his term after the country shifts to federalism.

The President also said he is “in a hurry” to step down from the presidency and would even quit his post if the federal charter is already finalized.

Critics have accused Duterte and his allies in Congress of moving to amend the Constitution to allow themselves remain in power. - with a report from Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News
