Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Tuesday ordered the removal of the names of politicians from public and private schools and hospitals in the capital.

In a press conference, Moreno said he does not agree that politicians should "immortalize their names" in basketball courts and gymnasiums "as if it is your money" being spent.

"Pinabubura ko, pinatatanggal ko ultimo pangalan ko at pangalan ng mga politiko na nakawelding, nakapintura, nakakabit sa mga eskuwelahan. I told them 'huwag niyong pulitikahin ang ating paaralan'. Let's leave politics to politicians and our educational institutions to academicians," he said.

He said only dead people deserve to have their names immortalized "and only in museums."

Putting the names of politicians in schools is subtly teaching children to do the same in the future, he said.

Moreno has won praise from several sectors for cleaning up Divisoria and other city streets of vendors and removing garbage from Liwasang Bonifacio.

On Tuesday, he warned garbage firms that he will go after them if his cleanup drive is sabotaged.
