Mom dies protecting baby as house collapses during Leyte quake

MANILA -- A 19-year-old mother in Ormoc, Leyte died protecting her 4-month old baby as a magnitude 6.5 earthquake brought their house down last Thursday. 

Authorities said Rhissa Rosales was embracing her child when the walls of their house in Barangay Cabao-an collapsed during the powerful quake. 

The baby was quickly rescued but it took four men half an hour to rescue Rosales who was buried in the rubble.

After the tremor, residents of Barangay Cabao-an have been staying inside tents at the church compound in fear of strong aftershocks.

Ormoc City, along with Palo, Leyte, Tacloban City, Cebu City, and Mandaue City felt Intensity 5 during the quake. Intensity 6, meanwhile, was felt in Jaro, and Kananga and Capoocan, Leyte

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has recorded over 1,700 partially damaged and 700 totally damaged houses in the areas hit by the quake in Leyte. -- Report from Jorge Cariño, ABS-CBN News
