Hundreds of donors trooped to the Carmona Community Center in Cavite Friday to participate in the Lingkod Kapamilya Blood Donation Project.
Marites Parreño, 57, made the event a family trip as she waited in line with her cousins to donate blood.
“Hindi na kami nagdalawang isip na tumulong sapagkat maraming kababayan namin ang nangangailangan ng dugo," said Parreño.
(We didn't have to think twice about coming here today because a lot of people out there need blood.)
She said the idea of donating blood had never occurred to her until a relative suffered an accident.
“'Yung kamag-anak ko naputulan ng buto, siya po ay nangailangan pero medyo nahirapan po maghanap. Kaya mula nun nagkaroon ako ng interes na makatulong,” she explained.
(One of my relatives broke a bone. He needed blood and it was a struggle for us to find some. That event made me interested in helping others.)
Because of her personal experience, Parreño and her relatives resolved to donate blood so other patients would not have the same experience she had.
Parreño was among the 745 individuals who turned up for the blood drive.
Friday’s event is a breakthrough, according to Joji Quiambao-Cadiente, Blood Program Coordinator from the Carmona municipal government.
“Napaka-successful. This is the first time na naka achieve kami ng more than 500 [blood bags] na as of this moment... pinakamataas na target namin 'to sa history [ng] blood donation namin sa buong taon."
(This is a very successful event. We’ve already collected more than 500 blood bags as of this moment... This is the highest target we've reached in the history of our blood donation for the whole year.)
In line with Blood Donor’s Month, Lingkod Kapamilya is set to hold more blood donation events nationwide.
