MANILA - Some 84 policemen linked to illegal drugs, terrorism and other crimes could be dismissed from the service, Philippine National Police Chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa said Monday.
These include Supt. Lito Cabamongan, who was caught smoking marijuana, and Supt. Ma. Christina Nobleza, who was allegedly involved with an Abu Sayyaf extremist, Dela Rosa said.
This disproved critics' allegations that the police leadership was cracking down only low-ranking troops, said Dela Rosa, who assumed the top PNP post last year promising to clean the ranks.
"Di natin pinagtatakpan. Natutuwa nga tayo na may official na nahuhuli. That could prove na sincere tayo sa ating ginagawa, di ito papogi lang," he added.
(We are not covering up for anyone. We are happy that officials are among those apprehended. This proves that we are sincere and not just showing off.)
"Madadagdagan yan. As I said, no mercy sa mga kalokohan, no mercy tayo dyan," he said.
(There will be more. As I said, there will be no mercy against wrongdoers.)
