FDA probes liquor firm for 'poisonous gin' after reported death of woman

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered an investigation on liquor company, Juan Brew, Inc., which is allegedly responsible for distributing poisonous gin known as "Cosmic Carabao."

According to a viral social media post, 2 women reportedly vomited and fainted shortly after drinking Cosmic Carabao. The victims were rushed to different hospitals where one of them reportedly died.

FDA Officer-in-charge Dr. Eric Domingo revealed he received a report from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute that one of the victims had methanol poisoning.

The FDA has already taken a sample of the "Cosmic Carabao" to confirm if it has methanol and check how it was manufactured.

According to Domingo, Juan Brew Inc. is licensed to manufacture and distribute liquor but its Cosmic Carabao signature gin has no certificate of product registration. It also has to undergo safety tests before it can be sold legally.

Cosmic Carabao products being sold online have been taken down.

ABS-CBN News tried to contact officials of Juan Brew but was unable to reach anyone as of posting.

The dead victim's family also refused to give a comment. - April Rafales, ABS-CBN News
