CEBU CITY - Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Diño said Saturday that he is studying the cancellation of a bus rapid transit (BRT) system that is set to be implemented here before the year ends.

"If this project is a waste of time, effort and money and it will become a total disaster in Cebu, then we have to stop," Diño said.

The official made the statement after meeting various stakeholders in Cebu City, including Engineer Rene Santiago, a transportation expert.

During the meeting, Santiago said the BRT will likely fail because of Cebu City's narrow roads and the process of acquiring right of way.

He said that the city instead needs to push for a Light Rail Transit and replace old jeepneys with new buses.

Dino said he will urge President Rodrigo Duterte and the departments of Transportation and Finance to support an LRT system in Cebu.

The proposed BRT is a brainchild of Cebu Mayor Tomas Osmeña and other local officials, who are studying ways to ease traffic congestion in Metro Cebu.
