Paolo Duterte blasts 'friend' who dragged him in Speakership race

MANILA -- Davao City 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte on Sunday lambasted a "friend" who supposedly used him to disrespect a candidate for House Speaker and his spouse.

President Rodrigo Duterte's son said he does not want his name to be dragged into the speakership issue and "dirty" politics.

"Kung sino man ang gusto na idamay ako sa usapin ng speakership sa House of Representatives — huwag po ninyo akong gamitin. Huwag po ang pangalan ko. Ilabas po ninyo ako sa inyong marumi, mapanghamak, bastos, at nakakawala ng respeto na uri ng pulitika," he said in a statement released by regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.

(Whoever wants to drag me in the issue of speakership in the House of Representatives -- don't use me and my name. Exclude me from your dirty, malicious, rude and disrespectful kind of politics.)

(We are friends but our friendship has limitations. Our friendship is not a license for you to use me to destroy your opponent, disrespect his spouse and his family.)

Duterte then urged his fellow House members to choose a leader who respects others, especially women, and whose interests are not just for personal gain.

Among those vying for Speaker are Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez; Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, the losing 2016 runningmate of the President; and Marinduque Rep. Lord Alan Velasco, who was endorsed last week by PDP-Laban chaired by the elder Duterte.

Cayetano, in a statement earlier this week, criticized Velasco and his wife for supposedly refusing the President's proposal to share the Speakership term with other contenders.

"I am deeply disappointed that after we both expressed full agreement with the President's proposal Rep. Velasco and his wife are now making a turn around and won't honor President's wishes," Cayetano said in a statement.

On Monday, Cayetano said he did not feel alluded to in Paolo Duterte's statement.

"I don't feel alluded to. Sinabi lang niya, sana walang bastusan. Ano bang pinakamalaking pambabastos na nangyari? When Lord said there's no such term agreement and the President said meron," he told ANC.

(He only said that I hope there would be no rudeness. What's the biggest rudeness that happened? When Lord said that there's no such term agreement and the President said there was one.)

Cayetano said that he has not said anything disrespectful to Velasco's wife Wen.

He added that among the Duterte family members, Paolo is not the one he is closest to, but he defended the President's son when he faced allegations of drug ties in a Senate hearing.

"Of the whole family, siguro hindi ako pinakamalapit kay Congressman Paolo, but noong tinira s'ya sa Senate, I called Davao, asked about his background and defended him noong tinitira siya ni Senator Trillanes," he said.

(Of the whole family, perhaps I'm not closest to Congressman Paolo, but when he was being hit in the Senate, I called Davao, asked about his background and defended him when Senator Trillanes was attacking him.)

"Ang pananaw ko, ang Cayetano saka ang Duterte [families] magkadikit talaga at alam ni Presidente iyan, alam ng buong pamilya nila iyan."

(In my opinion, the Cayetano and Duterte families are allies and the President knows that, their whole family knows that.)
