MANILA - Malacañang on Monday expressed confidence former senator Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan will do well as the new secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
"We are confident that Secretary Honasan would perform well in his new assignment as chief of the DICT, which is headed for exciting times as our people expect the full roll out of the national fiber optic cable network and operationalization of the country's third major telecommunications player," Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
Honasan took his oath before President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday before joining a Cabinet meeting.
Panelo added Malacañang believes in Honasan's wealth of experience as a legislator.
"We likewise believe that he would continue and improve on the good plans and programs of his predecessor, Mr. Eliseo Mijares Rio Jr., whose leadership is credited for the improvement of e-governance which reduced queues at government offices, among other countless accomplishments," he said.
Duterte appointed Honasan as DICT secretary last November.
He replaced DICT officer-in-charge Eliseo Rio, who served as head of the National Telecommunications Commission during the time of former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
