ZAMBOANGA CITY - Maritime Police and Bureau of Customs personnel confiscated some 40 boxes of alleged smuggled cigarettes worth P764,000 in a passenger cargo vessel Tuesday morning.
Police Capt. Benzar Mukarram, station chief of the 901st Maritime Police Station, said their team seized the imported cigarettes aboard MV Maria Rebecca, which came from Jolo, Sulu.
Mukarram added that based on their initial investigation, the checker of the vessel said that the cigarettes were supposed to be distributed in Zamboanga City but the owner remains unknown.
“May nag-inform po sa amin na allegedly 'yung MV Maria Rebecca is may laman na smuggled cigarettes, nag-conduct po kami ng surprise inspection nung MV Maria Rebecca," Mukarram said.
The seized contraband has been turned over to the customs office in Zamboanga for issuance of a warrant of seizure and detention for violation of importation and customs rules.
