MANILA - A boom in online gaming is fueling the influx of Chinese workers to the Philippines in the past couple of months, an immigration spokeswoman said Saturday.
Bureau of Immigration spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the online gaming industry was a "fresh market" for Chinese nationals looking to get jobs in the country. She likened this to the boom of Korean nationals who came to the country to pursue English language studies.
"Significant because of our merging industry like the online gaming industry. Fresh market po iyan kaya may mga pumupunta rito. In the past po, dumami naman dito ang Korean. So ang trend na nakikita natin dito is 'yung Chinese," Sandoval said.
She added she does not know if this will continue in the future.
Sandoval reiterated the bureau continues to crack down on illegal Chinese workers entering the country.
Last Thursday, around 106 foreign workers, including 97 Chinese, were allegedly found without working permits. Among those who were put into the BI's custody was a minor working for a business process outsourcing company.
