A barangay chairman in the town of Lasam, Cagayan was arrested after authorities confiscated illegal drugs, a gun, and a grenade in his residence on Wednesday, police said.
Viga Brgy. Chairman Florante Duarte, 46, was arrested by the Lasam police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, following a search operation in his home.
Authorities recovered three sachets of alleged shabu, a caliber .45 pistol with seven ammunition, and an MK2 fragmentation grenade.
Duarte, who has been brought to the Ballesteros District Jail, faces several charges including violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and New Firearms Law, and unlawful possession of explosives.
Police Sr. Insp. Leon Umbrero, chief of Lasam police, said they have been closely monitoring Duarte since he surrendered in the government's anti-drug campaign.
"Sa surveillance namin, napatunayan 'yung sumbong na talagang hindi siya tumigil sa iligal niyang gawain kaya nga nag-apply na kami ng search warrant,” Umbrero said.
In the past two weeks, various local police units of Cagayan province have arrested "high-value" targets including another barangay chairman, two barangay kagawad, and a municipal traffic enforcer.
