Interior and Local Government Sec. Eduardo Año said authorities are halting the travel of locally stranded individuals (LSIs) to Eastern Visayas until July 9, as the region tries to stave off the spread of COVID-19.
In an interview on Teleradyo Saturday, Año said quarantine facilities in Region 8 are full and local officials said they couldn't accommodate new arrivals anymore.
"Kasi biglang nag-surge ang cases sa Region 8. Nasa 467 cases na sila at kahapon 3 ang namatay," Año said.
"Sa request ng RTF 8 at LGUs, pinaunlakan natin ang kanilang request na 14 days moratorium muna hanggang sa magbakante na ang kanilang quarantine facilities."
Meanwhile, housing units in Concepcion town, Iloilo, which were converted into a temporary isolation facility, have reached full capacity.
The units managed by the National Housing Authority (NHA) could hold up to 50 people, but due to the arrival of more LSIs the area is now occupied by 61 people.
LSIs are no longer welcome in Concepcion, which is why the Iloilo provincial government is looking for other places that will serve as temporary shelters for the new arrivals.
Those discharged from Concepcion were given P2,000 and a sack of rice each, according to Mayor Raul Banias. -- With a report from Jennifer Garcia Hernandez, ABS-CBN News
