Six new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases were reported in Zamboanga del Norte, more than doubling the total infections in the province to 11.
In a virtual briefing organized by the Philippine Information Agency Western Mindanao, Dr. Joshua Brillantes, assistant regional director of the Department of Health in Region 9, said the new cases were reported on Thursday.
Four of these new cases were locally stranded individuals (LSIs) who traveled from Metro Manila and Cotabato City, while the two others were crew members of the Medallion Shipping vessel.
According to Zamboanga del Norte Task Force COVID-19, two of the new COVID-19 patients have had exposure to LSIs earlier found to be COVID-19 positive.
The first COVID-19 test of one of the 6 patients turned up negative, but two days later he manifested symptoms of the disease, which prompted the local health office to conduct another reverse transmission polymerase chain reaction test.
The result of the second, which came out Thursday, was positive.
Of the total 11 confirmed cases in Zamboanga del Norte, 8 were stranded individuals.
In the entire Western Mindanao region, the number of COVID-19 cases has reached 228, as of Friday, with Zamboanga city still holding the most number of cases in Region 9 with 196, followed by Zamboanga del Sur (18), Zamboanga del Norte (11) and Zamboanga Sibugay (3).
Of these cases, 25 were stranded individuals, 25 from the communities, 171 from the Zamboanga City Reformatory Center and 2 repatriated Overseas Filipino Workers.
