MANILA (UPDATE) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formed a special board of inquiry to look into a misencounter between policemen and soldiers in Samar province that left 6 state troopers dead, said its chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde.
Albayalde has also relieved the commander of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion of Region 8 pending an investigation into the misencounter.
The encounter happened early Monday morning in a remote village in Villarreal town where a platoon of soldiers mistook a group of police officers as members of the New People's Army, a military spokesman earlier said.
Aside from the 6 dead policemen, 9 other uniformed personnel were hurt in the clash that was allegedly a result of "lack of coordination" between the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
The top cop is set to leave for Samar on Tuesday afternoon to visit wounded personnel and check on the policemen who were killed in the incident.
