CAGAYAN DE ORO – The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has extended help to lawyers affected by continuing firefights between government troops and terrorists in Marawi City.
According to IBP National President Rosario Setis-Reyes, the group identified 40 members who were affected in Marawi, but would initially give cash assistance to 22 who were severely affected.
"Konting tulong na pinansyal [ang ibibigay namin], pero gusto naming ipadama sa kanila na kami ay nakikiisa sa kanilang hirap na dinanas ngayon," said Reyes.
The financial assistance was turned over to IBP Lanao del Sur President Aminoden Macalandap.
Macalandap said the aid would be a big help to the affected members as most lawyers in the province earn their living through court appearances, which were halted when they were displaced.
"Malaking tulong considering the fact na 'yung ibang members natin, especially in the private practice, they heavily relied sa pang araw-araw na court appearances, iyong daily practice. Unfortunately biglang naputol iyon, at everybody na-displace lahat," said Macalandap.
The IBP’s Lanao del Sur chapter, which includes lawyers from Marawi City, has over 240 members.
