MANILA (UPDATE) — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off Ilocos Sur Monday afternoon, state geological agency Phivolcs said.
The tremor, earlier recorded at magnitude 4.8, happened at 4:02 p.m., 55 kilometers northwest of Candon City.
It had a depth of 4 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, Phivolcs said.
Intensity IV was felt in Candon City, while Intensity III was felt in Vigan City, Sinait, Santa and Magsingal, Sta. Lucia, Santa Maria, Sta. Cruz, and San Esteban in Ilocos Sur; and in San Fernando City, La Union.
Intensity II was felt in Cabugao, San Juan, Bantay, San Ildefonso, Narvacan, Nagbukel, Tagudin, Burgos, Santiago, Sigay, and Suyo, in Ilocos Sur, as well as in Banna, Bacarra, Laoag City, and Batac in Ilocos Norte.
The following instrumental intensities were also recorded in the following areas:
Intensity III - Vigan City
Intensity II - Sinait, Ilocos Sur
Intensity I - Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte
No damage has been reported so far. Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected.
