MANILA - The House of Representatives recently approved on third and final reading a measure which seeks to rename the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and its administrative office.
Under House Bill No. 9198, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport will be renamed the Lapu-Lapu Cebu International Airport as an homage to the man considered the country's first hero.
The chieftain of Mactan is remembered in history books as the one who killed Portuguese conquistador Ferdinand Magellan in 1521.
The measure also aims to rename the airport's corporate body, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority, as the Lapu-Lapu-Cebu International Airport Authority.
“This will give Lapu-Lapu the recognition that the outstanding Filipino deserved, and in the same thrust, improve the choice of name,” Cebu City Rep. Raul Del Mar, principal author of the bill, said in a statement Saturday.
He added that the renaming will be "consistent with the city’s name and location of its airport." He said it is "prudent and beneficial" to keep the word "Cebu" in the name, citing its fame "historically, economically and culturally."
The Senate has no counterpart bill as of yet.
