MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Panabo City, Davao del Norte Judge Dorothy Montejo-Gonzaga as Court of Appeals Associate Justice.
Gonzaga, presiding judge of Panabo City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 4, was the one who ordered the arrest of self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato for kidnapping in March 2017.
Matobato and another confessed hitman Arturo Lascañas have accused Duterte of ordering killings in Davao City.
Lascañas, who is facing charges for the 2003 murder of radio broadcaster and fierce Duterte critic Jun Pala, reportedly left for Singapore in April last year.
Matobato also remains at large.
Duterte has denied the existence of a death squad in his city, where he served for over two decades as mayor.
Gonzaga takes the post vacated by Romeo Barza, who was appointed Presiding Justice of the appeals court.
The magistrate’s name was chosen by the President from a shortlist that included 8 aspirants.
