BAYBAY CITY - Nineteen policemen tagged in the killing of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa inside his own jail cell in November on pleaded "not guilty" to the crime when they faced the court Wednesday.
Supt. Marvin Marcos and 18 other Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Region 8 (CIDG-8) members and maritime personnel entered their pleas upon arraignment for homicide at the Regional Trial Court Branch 14 here.
Marcos and his men were released Friday last week from the CIDG 8 detention facility after murder charges were downgraded to homicide, a bailable offense.
The Senate last year investigated Espinosa's death and found that the slay was "premeditated and with abuse of authority" on the part of the police operatives, but the justice department later on backtracked on its initial findings.
The court set the preliminary conference on Sept. 13.
