A police officer died Friday due to complications from COVID-19 in Cebu City, the only area in the country under the strictest lockdown due to a recent spike in coronavirus cases.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said the officer was a police executive master sergeant in their investigation unit.

He was rushed to the hospital on June 10 after he showed symptoms of COVID-19. On June 13 he tested positive for the virus.

He died 6 days later, becoming among the total seven police officers from around the country who have succumbed to the disease.

There are 25 COVID-19 cases among policemen in Cebu City as of Saturday.

They are among the total 456 officers who have contracted the disease, most of whom are frontliners, said Philippine National Police spokesperson Police Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac. Of this number, 276 have recovered.

Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police Regional Office 6 has deployed 53 more policemen to Cebu City.

The police force will augment the crisis response team tasked to enforce guidelines of the enhanced community quarantine in the city. Cebu City reverted to ECQ on June 16 following two weeks of general quarantine as COVID-19 cases spiked.

“We are overstretched, and some are in isolation,” said Police Col. Cydric Tamayo, CCPO Officer-in-Charge.

Disinfection is now ongoing inside the CCPO compound, which is under lockdown. Transactions such as processing of travel documents for locally stranded individuals have been suspended.

“We are on ECQ, we won’t allow individuals to leave or arrive,” said Tamayo.
