MANILA- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will not issue a certificate of proclamation to Duterte Youth party-list just yet amid questions on the eligibility of former youth commissioner Ronald Cardema to be its nominee.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said there are still 2 petitions against Cardema that the poll body has yet to resolve.
This prompted the Comelec en banc to halt the issuance of a certificate of proclamation to the youth party-list group.
"In the meantime, the commission en banc has decided that because of these pending cases questioning his qualifications to substitute, the commission en banc will not yet issue a proclamation certificate to Duterte Youth party-list," Guanzon said Wednesday.
The latest petition against Cardema was filed by a youth group composed of Aunell Ross Angcos, Cyra Aurelio, and Hannah Navarroza.
The group claims that Cardema committed material misrepresentation on his qualifications as a representative of the party-list given his age.
Cardema, 34, wants to be a representative of a youth sector party that limits representatives to up to 30 years old only.
Duterte Youth’s original nominees included Cardema's wife Ducielle Marie Suarez. But on May 12, a day before the elections, all 5 nominees of the group filed their notices of withdrawal along with Cardema’s substitution as the party-list nominee.
He said the original nominees withdrew over fear of left-leaning lawmakers.
Before his nomination as youth sectoral representative, Cardema served as National Youth Commission chair and declared support for the Duterte administration.
