(UPDATED) A student with roots from Marawi City will graduate summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Arman Ali Ghodsinia, a BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology student from the College of Science, obtained a general weighted average of 1.176.

He will deliver the valedictory speech in University of the Philippines Diliman's graduation rites this Sunday.

According to Ghodsinia, his speech will contain a call for peace in Marawi City.

Ghodsinia's mother is from Marawi City while his father is Iranian.

"Sana lang matapos na ang gulo doon para sa mga bata at makapag-aral. Masuwerte ako at nandito sa Maynila, malayo doon pero sana matapos na ang lahat ng kaguluhan doon," he said.

(I hope the violence in Marawi will end soon so that children can study. I am lucky that I am here in Metro Manila, far from there but I hope the fighting will stop.)

Ghodsinia also called on fellow Filipinos to be vigilant amid the martial declaration in Mindanao, as well as to protect the democracy, which is the theme of this year's graduation rites.
