MANILA — Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto asked well-wishers to refrain from organizing suprise parties for his birthday on Wednesday, as a precaution against the coronavirus pandemic.

"Pakiusap na wala munang celebration o surprise party. Hindi naman ako mahilig sa party at mas mahalaga pa rito, bawal pa ang mga gathering.. buhay na buhay pa si COVID, mga kaibigan!" said Sotto, 31.

"Papunta na po akong opis ngayon. May binabalak kayo itigil niyo na 'yan!" he said on Twitter, where he had 1.4 million followers.

(Please refrain from celebrations or surprise party. I'm not fond of parties anyway and more importantly, mass gatherings are still barred. COVID is still alive, friends. I'm going to the office today. If you're planning anything, stop it.)

Last month, Metro Manila police chief Gen. Debold Sinas and some of his colleagues faced charges for allegedly violating a 10-people limit on gatherings at his mañanita or early morning birthday serenade. President Rodrigo Duterte had refused to sack Sinas.

Sotto told supporters who want to send him gifts to instead buy food packs for the needy or drop these off at his office for distribution.
