MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo said Wednesday the Philippines must show courage and dignity after a Chinese vessel hit a Filipino fishermen’s boat anchored near Recto Bank over the weekend.

"Sa ating Araw ng Kasarinlan, magpakita tayo ng tapang at dignidad, lalo na kapag kapakanan at kalayaan ng ating mga mamamayan ang nakasalalay," Robredo said in a tweet.

The Vice President also called on the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of National Defense (DND) to look into the matter.

"Buo ang aking suporta sa panawagan ng ating AFP at DND na imbestigahan ang insidenteng ito, at panagutin ang kinauukulan," Robredo said.

The military earlier described the incident as a "hit and run" after the Chinese vessel rammed into the fishing boat and left 22 Filipino fishermen at sea.

The Philippines has filed a diplomatic protest over the incident, said Foreign Affairs Sec. Teodoro "Teddy" Locsin Jr.
