MANILA- Communications Secretary Martin Andanar asserted his authority over the Philippine Information Agency as its head was investigated over corruption allegations.

In a department order dated June 10, Andanar said the Presidential Communications Operations Office would be the "final approving authority" for all appointments and personnel action within the PIA.

Personnel actions would refer to hiring, appointment, suspension, and termination of officials and employees within the PIA, an attached agency of the PCOO.

The order also requires PIA director general Harold Clavite to work with Andanar in "ensuring proper human resource management within the PIA head office and regional offices."

Andanar said his department order aimed "to ensure the integrity of the investigation" against Clavite, who slammed the inquiry against him as a demolition job.

The PIA chief lamented how the PCOO made the investigation against him public even though he has yet to formally respond.

Marvin Gatpayat, PCOO undersecretary for legal affairs, said Clavite was given until Thursday, June 13 to respond to the corruption allegations against him.
