MANILA - Akbayan Rep. Tom Villarin wants retiring Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales to run for senator.

"Beyond her tour of duty as our country’s no-nonsense Ombudsman, she should continue her graft-busting legacy as an elected senator of the republic," he said in a statement.

Villarin also deplored how Morales’ impending retirement may affect the prosecution of the pork barrel scam cases.

“Leaving her work in the Ombudsman on the pork barrel cases to an appointee of President Duterte would likely see it ‘go down the drain’ as the Duterte administration is not serious on pursuing them but rather everything is negotiable," he said.

"With a dearth of senatoriables who possess integrity, industry and independence, one who speaks her mind out without fear or favor, I sincerely believe in her and so do millions of Filipinos who will do their utmost to have her win. Our country needs her badly," Villarin added.

Morales was appointed in 2012 to replaced impeached Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez who resigned before she can be tried by the Senate.

Before this ,she was a Supreme Court Associate Justice who was chosen by President Benigno Aquino III to swear him into office because she dissented in the Supreme Court decision that allowed President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to appoint Renato Corona as chief justice.
