MANILA – A government prosecutor was “fighting for her life” after she was shot by unidentified assailants in front of her home in Calapan City on Monday morning, an official said.
Josephine Olivar was in her car when she was attacked by assailants on motorcycles in Barangay Bayanan 1. She was brought to the hospital for surgery.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the incident was "probably work-related.”
He said he instructed the National Bureau of Investigation to look into the incident.
“Our prosecutors' lives are always at risk due to the nature of their job. We're hoping that the new Congress will be more sympathetic to the bill providing survivorship benefits to the prosecution service,” Guevarra said in a statement.
Last January, former Cebu City assistant prosecutor Mary Ann Castro was shot dead.
In July last year, retired government prosecutor Salvador "Buddy" Solima and his wife, Verose, were shot inside their house in Cebu City.
In May last year, Quezon City assistant prosecutor Rogelio Velasco was shot dead.
