BAGUIO CITY - A scam artist posing as Baguio City mayor-elect Benjamin Magalong has swindled several restaurants here out of thousands of pesos.

Karla Santos, owner of Manpiyaan Cafe, said they received a phone call on Tuesday over a food order for a supposed thanksgiving party.

"Magaling siyang magsalita, magalang. Alam niya kung paano mag-warm-up sa people. I don’t know if it’s part of the psychology of the whole modus operandi," she said.

The impostor ordered several dishes, such as buffalo wings and spare ribs, and bottles of pricey alcohol. He also demanded some P10,000 worth of prepaid load.

Santos said nobody showed up to pick up the food items and the impostor's phone number was no longer in use.

Magalong told ABS-CBN News that at least 6 restaurants fell victim to the scam and he has ordered the police to investigate the incident.

He cautioned business establishments not to entertain orders placed supposedly under his name.

"Very unusual o very absurd 'yung demand na hindi naman reflective doon sa aking character. Hindi ko po ugali na mag-extort po at humingi po ng libre," he said.

The retired police general who won the city's mayoralty post in the midterm elections believed the scam was used to smear his reputation.

"I am saddened that such incidents are being done with the obvious intent to discredit me and bring me dishonor," he wrote on Facebook. - Report from Michelle Soriano, ABS-CBN News
