ILIGAN CITY - Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia has started serving his three-month preventive suspension for usurping authority while being detained for criminal charges.
The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) served the Sandiganbayan order on Wednesday afternoon.
Regencia, who received the order in his office, said it only interrupts his duties to serve the public.
He was previously charged with usurpation of authority for performing his duties while in detention from October 2015 to January 2017.
Regencia was linked to the ambush try on Iligan City Rep. Vicente "Varf" Belmonte Jr. on December 11, 2014. But he was released on January 2017 after the multiple murder and frustrated murder cases filed against him were dismissed by court.
Iligan City Vice Mayor Jemar Vera Cruz and City Councilor Samuel Huertas assumed responsibilities by rule of succession.
“I think we will only be here for a short while. Mayor Regencia is expecting the court to let out a temporary restraining order in his favor,” Huertas said.
Vera Cruz, on the other hand, is confident that Regencia will get through this.
He said the court granted Regencia an injunction when the latter’s capacity to perform duties was under question. - report from Roxanne Arevalo, ABS-CBN News
