MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Leni Robredo will both be present at the 119th Independence Day Celebration on Monday, the first for the administration.
National Historical Commission of the Philippines chair Rene Escalante said the Office of the Vice President has confirmed that Robredo would attend the June 12 flag-raising ceremony at the Rizal Park, joining the president at the commemoration.
ABS-CBN News tried to reach Robredo's office for confirmation but has yet to get a response as of this posting.
The event will be among the few occasions when the two top officials will be seen together in public following a fallout that triggered Robredo’s resignation from the Duterte cabinet in December.
Robredo quit as head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) after the president asked her to stop attending cabinet meetings. She has since made efforts to reach out to the president.
Earlier this year, Robredo was accused of destabilizing the administration after she criticized the government’s war on drugs in a video played at a side event of the 60th Session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs.
She denied any involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow Duterte.
The video drew criticism and impeachment calls against the Vice President, but Duterte himself told allies that he would "not countenance" such moves.
Both Robredo and Duterte have faced impeachment complaints in the House of Representatives. The complaint against the President has been junked, while lawmakers appear lukewarm to endorsing the complaint filed against Robredo.
