MANILA - A jail officer at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City was diagnosed with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after he went home in Itogon town, Benguet.

According to Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan on Friday, the jail officer went home in Barangay Ucab after he tested negative for COVID-19 through a rapid test.

He eventually underwent swab tests for confirmation.

It was only on Friday that the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) told him and local officials he was infected with the virus.

Palangdan said they have conducted contact tracing and swab testing in Itogon.

The mayor also placed Ucab under total lockdown to prevent large-scale contamination.

Earlier this week, the Department of Justice, which oversees the country's prison facilities, said 33 jail personnel have contracted the disease, including 26 at Bilibid.

At least 161 inmates have, meanwhile, contracted the disease: 82 at the Muntinlupa penitentiary and 79 at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong.
