MANILA- (UPDATE) A Commission on Appointments (CA) committee approved the appointment of lawyer John Castriciones as agrarian reform secretary on Tuesday.

The CA Committee on Agrarian Reform approved Castriciones' nomination, which will need the approval of the CA plenary, said Senator Grace Poe.

Poe, who chairs the committee, explained that 13 lawmakers voted in favor of Castriciones' appointment while 2 others objected.

"Ipapaalala ko siguro sa aking sponsorship speech, bagama’t nanaig at nanalo siya at na-confirm siya, marami siyang dapat isaayos at dapat siguro ay 'wag din maging vindictive siyempre doon sa mga nag-oppose sa kanya,” she said.

(During my sponsorship speech, I will remind him that despite his confirmation, he has a lot to fix and he should not be vindictive to those who opposed him.)

Castriciones was first appointed to the Department of Agrarian Reform in December 2017 following the CA's rejection of Duterte’s first appointee to the post, activist Rafael Mariano in September.

Earlier this year, the CA deferred action on Castriciones' appointment, leading President Rodrigo Duterte to reappoint him.
