MANILA—The Philippines has a "defeatist" attitude toward its maritime claims versus China under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, an international political analyst said Sunday.
Gregory Poling, director of the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, said in an interview on ANC that the country seems to have adopted "a narrative that China basically has already won."
"But there's a huge spectrum of options between surrender and war that haven't been tried," Poling said.
He also said that it was about time that the Philippines began repairing the runway on Pag-asa island in the Spratlys.
The runway, which is used to resupply the residents of Pag-asa, was already falling apart, according to Poling.
