Davao Del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez on Monday said he will back the President's son, Congressman-elect Paolo Duterte, if he decides to run for Speaker.

This, despite House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez's statement that giving the neophyte congressman the Speakership would be a breach of "delicadeza" since his father is already President.

Speaking to ANC's Headstart, Alvarez said he sees nothing wrong with having the President's son as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

"Why not? Huwag nating pagsamahin 'yung porket anak siya ng Presidente hindi na siya pwedeng mag aspire for Speakership." he said.

"Delicadeza? Ano problema kung anak siya ng pangulo? Kung mapapatunayan naman na magiging magaling siya na Speaker at may liderato siya, why don't we give him a chance to prove himself."

He added: "In fact pag tumakbo si Congressman Paolo for Speaker, susuportahan ko. I will support him 100 percent."

For his part, Suarez said he expects the young Duterte to have the same qualities as his father but noted that giving him the Speakership might be disadvantageous.

"Siguro kung hindi pangulo ang Pangulong Digong, he can be a contender. Pero delicadeza dictates...'Yung presidente tapus 'yung Speaker, anak mo. Sayang. The opportunity, medyo hindi sa advantage niya na ang Pangulo ay tatay niya. Siguro ang mga taong bayan medyo mag-iisip ng konting division ng authority ng ating panunungkulan," he said.

A former Davao City vice mayor, Paolo Duterte was elected to represent the first district of Davao City in the lower house.
He had earlier resigned his post as Davao City Vice-Mayor in December 25, 2017, citing delicadeza after a public squabble with his daughter.

His sister, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio, earlier said any question about Paolo's possible Speakership bid should be addressed to their father, President Duterte.
