'You are not mercenaries': Duterte thanks military officers for service amid COVID-19 crisis

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday met with military officers to express his gratitude for their service to the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Duterte met with officers of the Philippine Army (PA) and Philippine Air Force (PAF) officers at the Malacañang Golf (MALAGO) Clubhouse in Malacañang, where he expressed his gratitude to the military for their service to the Filipino people.

"Kaya bilib ako. Saludo ako kung ginawa ninyo. I'm not paying you. I know you are not mercenaries. You do not do it for money. You do it out of passion, for the love of country, because we are all Filipinos. And we know where we place ourselves when the time comes," he said.

Also present in the meeting was Senator Christopher "Bong" Go and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

The military, along with the country's police force, are at the forefront of law enforcement while several areas in the country is on lockdown.

Duterte has also asked the military to help the Department of Social Welfare and Development in distributing cash aid to poor families during the coronavirus crisis.
