MANILA—Three senators are competing for the upper chamber's education committee, Senate President Vicente "Tito" Sotto said Saturday.
Sotto said senators Joel Villanueva and Sherwin Gatchalian, and Senator-elect Pia Cayetano have expressed interest in the committee chairmanship, currently held by outgoing Sen. Chiz Escudero.
"Kausap ko si Sen. Pia Cayetano, hinihiling niya 'yun kasi 'yun 'yung dati niyang committee at marami siyang programa na gustong gawin," he told radio DWIZ.
"Ang the best na paraan muna is hayaan muna sila-silang mag-usap although tutulong na rin kami."
Gatchalian, who currently heads the Senate committees on energy and economic affairs, said he has been coordinating with his colleagues.
"Marami talaga. Tuloy-tuloy ang aming pag-uusap at konsultasyon sa isa’t isa. I’m sure magkakaroon naman ng magandang kalalabasan," he told radio DWIZ.
Should he head the education committee, Gatchalian said he would like to look into the K-to-12 program.
"Para mabigyan ng pokus 'yung adbokasiya natin sa edukasyon dahil marami tayong nakikitang pagkukulang. 'Yung K-to-12 pa lang malaking probelma na, 'yung mga grado ng ating kabataan ay hindi ganu'n kaganda," he said.
