MANILA - Senate President Tito Sotto said Friday he had talked to ABS-CBN broadcaster Ted Failon about a possible senatorial run in 2019.

Asked on ANC's Headstart if he was "proactively seeking" Failon to run, Sotto said "Yes, I talked to him already. I cannot discuss to you what we talked about because it involves ABS-CBN."

Failon, who anchors ABS-CBN's flagship newscast TV Patrol, had previously served as Leyte congressman.

Sotto also said former environment secretary Gina Lopez would be an asset in the chamber if she decides to seek a Senate seat.

"If she’s willing to join our coalition, why not? She would be a good asset also," Sotto answered when asked about Lopez.

Sotto said Lopez could take up the green causes championed by Senator Loren Legarda, who is not eligible for reelection.

In an interview with Headstart last April, the former environment chief and host of G Diaries which airs on ANC, the ABS-CBN News Channel, said she was focused on looking for people who help uplift poor communities through her ILOVE Foundation.
