MANILA - Former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III may soon lead 3 Senate committees, his successor, Vicente Sotto III said Thursday.
Pimentel was elected chairman of the Senate committee on trade and entrepreneurship, previously led by Senator Miguel Zubiri, who vacated the post after he took on the role of majority leader, said Sotto.
Sotto was majority leader and chairman of the ethics committee before he replaced Pimentel as Senate President this week.
The new Senate President said he also wanted Pimentel to take over the ethics panel because "he has the stature [and] his work ethics is impeccable."
Pimentel may also serve as head of a third committee and he has expressed preference for at least one, Sotto said.
Aside from the Senate panels, Pimentel was also elected chairman of the joint congressional committee on the electoral system, and as replacement of Senator Manny Pacquiao in the Commission on Appointments.
Pacquio and Pimentel are both members of President Rodrigo Duterte's party, PDP-Laban, which is entitled to seat one member in the CA, said Sotto.
"Si Manny ang nakaupo (is the one sitting), but it's over 2 years already. It's just but right and proper to have Koko replace him in the Commission on Appointments," he said.
Sotto said Pimentel was not offered the chairmanships as a concession for stepping down as leader of the chamber.
"We didn't even talk about the chairmanships of the committee when we were discussing the change in [Senate] leadership," he said.
