This is the first time that Duterte’s youngest son with former wife Elizabeth Zimmerman accompanied the chief executive in an official trip abroad.

The president’s long-time partner, Cielito “Honeylet” Avanceña, and their daughter Veronica, are also accompanying the chief executive in this trip.

Avanceña and Veronica accompanied Duterte in the chief executive's recently concluded trip to Cambodia, Hong Kong, and China.

Duterte flew to Russia in fulfillment of his vow to loosen ties with the Philippines’ traditional ally, the United States.

Before flying to Russia, Duterte said in a speech that he was making good on his promise to implement an “independent foreign policy,” adding that “overdependence on traditional partners has limited our room to maneuver in a very dynamic international arena.”
