MANILA- Senator Nancy Binay was proclaimed on Tuesday for a fresh 6-year term after slugging it out for the 12th and last spot in the winner's circle.
The eldest daughter of former Vice President Jejomar Binay garnered a total of 14,504,936 votes, edging out 13th-placer JV Ejercito who is also seeking reelection.
The cliffhanger finish came as Binay's younger sister, Abigail and younger brother, Junjun, battled for Makati mayor, the post held for years by the patriarch.
In her first term, Binay filed over 200 bills and resolutions in the Senate. She pushed for the repeal of the crime of premature marriage and expanded privileges for persons with disability.
She also co-sponsored the Expanded Maternity Leave Law, which grants a 120-day break to female workers regardless of civil status, and The Filipino Sign Language Act.
