MANILA - A trusted aide of slain Maute ISIS leader Isnilon Hapilon has been arrested, police said Tuesday.
Hashim Abtaib alias Abu Imam, an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group, was nabbed in Barangay Walled City, Jolo, Sulu on May 19.
PNP chief Oscar Albayalde said Abtaib is facing charges of kidnapping and serious illegal detention.
“Abtaib is accused in 7 separate criminal cases for kidnapping and serious illegal detention,” he said.
Abtaib was also allegedly involved in the kidnapping of 15 workers of Golden Harvest Plantation and the beheading of a soldier in Basilan in 2001.
“He is the subject of a warrant of arrest...for alleged involvement in the kidnapping of 15 workers of Golden Harvest Plantation in Brgy. Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan on June 11 2001. He [is] also believed to be involved in the beheading of Army personnel in Lower Manggas and Makiri in Isabela City, Basilan in 2001,” Albayalde said.
Authorities offered a P600,000 reward for information leading to Abtaib’s arrest after he was identified by a kidnap victim.
Authorities are also investigating Abtaib’s involvement in the Marawi siege.
“He has been transferred from Jolo, Sulu to Zamboanga City to undergo tactical debriefing and custodial investigation prior to presentation in court,” Albayalde said.
