MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - The House Committee on Justice unanimously approved on Monday its report dismissing the impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte.
All 17 lawmakers present voted to approve the committee report that dismissed the complaint, which cited the President's alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings.
Last week, the committee deemed the complaint filed by Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano as sufficient in form but insufficient in substance.
The justice committee's report will be submitted to the House plenary for approval.
Alejano, an ally of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, accused Duterte of amassing P2-billion in unexplained wealth in his initial complaint. He also said Duterte should be held responsible for the killings of drug suspects under his administration.
He then filed a supplemental complaint, saying Duterte failed to defend the country's sovereign rights and territorial claims when he supposedly allowed Chinese ships in the resource-rich Benham Rise.
The two complaints were referred to the Committee on Justice on May 9, which will also mark the start of the one-year ban against the filing of a fresh impeachment complaint against Duterte.-- with a report by RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
