MANILA - A suspected ranking member of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) was killed in a joint operation in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao early Monday morning.
The suspect was identified as Murad Ali, who goes by the alias "Abu Muhammad." Ali was said to be an administrative officer and bomb instructor of the BIFF.
Members of the military and police in the region went to Ali's safe house in Barangay Capiton to conduct a search. But when they opened the door, the suspect was already about to fire his Uzi.
Authorities then shot and killed Ali.
The Criminal Investigation and Detention Group (CIDG) said their men recovered a 60 millimeter mortar, a grenade, batteries, blasting caps and detonating cords in Ali's house.
They also found a notebook containing instructions on how to make a bomb. The notebook detailed specific ingredients and measurements on how to make a powerful explosive.
The notebook also bears the names of places, such as Elian in Datu Saudi, Maguindanao and Mlang in North Cotabato.
The BIFF admitted Ali was a member of their group, which is headed by Commander Karialan.
Insp. Achmad alibonga, Datu Odin Sinsuat police chief, said they have been monitoring the moves of Ali for a while.
They were also told that Ali was the culprit behind a series of bombings in Central Mindanao.
