MANILA- Malacañang commended Tuesday the resignation of Sen. Francis Pangilinan as president of the opposition Liberal Party, saying it shows that he accepts defeat.

Pangilinan tendered his resignation to Vice President Leni Robredo, chair of the LP, following the apparent loss of all 8 opposition senatorial candidates in the midterm elections.

Robredo has rejected his resignation.

"That's commendable. He accepts defeat," Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said during a Palace press briefing.

Pangilinan, in a statement, said he takes responsibility for the loss of the entire opposition senatorial slate in the May 13 polls.

"As campaign manager for the Otso Diretso slate, I was unable to ensure our victory in the elections and I therefore assume full responsibility for the outcome and hold myself primarily accountable for this defeat," Pangilinan said.

Sought for comment on Robredo’s rejection, Panelo said the matter is internal to the LP.

"That's for her (Robredo) and Sen. Pangilinan to resolve. That's internal within the party, we will never interfere," he said.

"Let LP speak for itself. We'll watch in amusement," he said.

Nine senatorial candidates backed by President Rodrigo Duterte's PDP-Laban and his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio's Hugpong ng Pagbabago, are set to be proclaimed. The three other winning candidates are independents.
