MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte's ex-girlfriend, outgoing Agusan del Norte Governor Angelica Amante-Matba, was proclaimed as the province's 2nd district representative earlier this week, beating her brother who was gunning for another congressional term.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) proclaimed Amante-Matba as the winner Wednesday after she garnered 120,068 votes, while her sibling and incumbent Agusan del Norte Rep. Erlpe John Amante got 69,623.
"Thank You for the trust you have bestowed on me and the whole team. I am deeply honored to represent Agusan in the halls of Congress," Amante-Matba said in a Facebook post.
In 2016, Duterte said in a public speech that he fell in "love at first sight" with Amante-Matba when she was a 27-year-old mayor.
Former Davao broadcaster is CDO's top councilor
In Cagayan de Oro City, former ABS-CBN Davao broadcaster Girlie Balaba - who has been tagged as a "close friend" of the President - was hailed as the top councilor in the city's second district.
Balaba earned 74,568 votes.
Balaba earlier denied rumors that there was a conflict between her and President's family, saying she was a long-time friend of the Dutertes.
Balaba ran under the PDP-Laban slate and was also endorsed by Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, head of regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
