MANILA—A special elections will be held Monday, May 20, in Barangay Dicamay 1, Jones town, Isabela after armed men torched a vote-counting machine there.

The Commission on Elections made the announcement Saturday, and said it has yet to tabulate certificates of canvass from Lanao del Sur, Isabela, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Washington DC PE, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

On Tuesday, election officers said the counting machine was being delivered to the municipal hall aboard a dump truck when it was attacked by two armed men about 6 a.m.

The suspects took the truck’s key and torched the machine before escaping.

Jones is the only area in Cagayan Valley under the red hotspot category due to intense political rivalry.

Incumbent mayor Leticia Sebastian and businesswoman Melanie Uy are both vying for the town's mayoralty.
