ILIGAN CITY – A local barangay chairman died here on Thursday afternoon after he was shot at by men riding in motorcycles.

Robert “Dodong” Fuentes was headed to a hardware store in Barangay Tibanga with members of his peacekeeping action team when the shooting occurred, city Police Director Senior Superintendent Leony Roy Ga told ABS-CBN News.

Rush-hour traffic slowed down Fuentes' patrol vehicle, which allowed the assailants to easily target the official, investigators said. Fuentes was rushed to hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Unidentified men also killed Fuentes’ brother Ronald, alias “Tata,” eight months ago. His brother’s death led his sister-in-law, then barangay chairman Myla, to step down. Fuentes, who was the first kagawad, then assumed office.

The police said the brothers were both on their drug watchlist. After Ronald’s death, Robert denied that they were involved in the illegal drug trade, and joined several police-initiated anti-drug efforts.

Ronald’s murder remains unsolved, as investigation into Robert’s death begins.
