Fire damages 11 houses in Iloilo City

ILOILO CITY — A fire broke out in Barangay Concepcion here Thursday night, damaging several houses.

According to residents, the blaze began at about 8 p.m. on the second floor of a house owned by Juliana Diel. Authorities had the fire under control at about 8:40 p.m.

Kenneth Diel, Juliana’s nephew, said her aunt was not at home at the time of the incident, and nobody was inside the house when the blaze started.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire but Kenneth said there was an altar on the second floor.

Besides Diel's house, 5 others were razed and 5 more were partially damaged. 

A fire marshal responding to the site collapsed and was brought to a hospital.

Iloilo City Fire Marshal F/SSupt. Jerry Candido experienced difficulty breathing after responding to the incident.

Initially, Candido was giving out instructions to his personnel and was being provided oxygen. But he collapsed after an hour and was immediately brought to a hospital.

Investigation of the Bureau of Fire Protection is still ongoing.
