Signal no.1 up in Batanes ahead of Ambo exit 1

MANILA (UPDATE) - Storm signal number 1 remained over Batanes on Sunday morning as Tropical depression Ambo is forecast to weaken into a low pressure area before it leaves the Philippines, the state weather bureau said.

The country's first storm (international name: Vongfong) was last spotted 185 kilometers west of Basco, Batanes at 10 a.m., moving north at 20 km per hour, while packing maximum winds of 45 km per hour and gusts of up to 55 kph.

It is forecast to bring moderate to heavy rains over Batanes and light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Babuyan Islands on Sunday, PAGASA said.

Ambo left at least 3 dead in Eastern Samar, where it first made landfall, and 1 other in Quezon province, officials earlier said. It displaced hundreds of thousands as the country grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, destroying houses and downing power lines in its wake.

The storm is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday, PAGASA earlier said.
